Villa Dupont
Villa Dupont, Xanadu Mansion
Cuba, Varadero
Villa Dupont, standing right above the coastal cliffs at the very tip of the Hicacos Peninsula, is a monument to the times when Cuba was actually ruled by American multimillionaires, one of whom was Irene Dupont de Nemours. In the 1920s, he bought almost the entire northern part of the peninsula for himself, and, having created infrastructure there, he sold the land at very high prices. The construction of his villa cost the American manufacturer more than 1.3 million dollars. The masons ordered from Italy mixed goat's milk into the cement in order to give the color of the mansion a special softness. In the four-story building, for greater convenience, an elevator was even installed.
In 1959, the mansion was nationalized, and a school was set up there, and then a chic restaurant that exists to this day. Dupont Villa is a great place for all golf lovers; international competitions are held here every year.
