Ambrosio Cave
Cueva de Ambrosio, Ambrosio Cave
Cuba, Varadero
The cave of Ambrosio is famous for its rock paintings, which are about three thousand years old. They were discovered in 1961.
The cave during the colonization was a refuge for runaway slaves who performed their pagan rituals here, which is reflected in the rock art. Also, scientists found among the numerous patterns of 72 Indian drawings that recreate the modern solar calendar. The cave is not made by hands, it was formed as a result of the movement of underwater waters, which washed out niches in the rock. Vegetation is visible in some places.
The cave also has its own inhabitants - harmless bats and a recently discovered species of gecko, entered into the registry in 2009. In depth, the Ambrosio cave reaches about 300 meters, but not all of its corners are accessible to tourists.
