Fortress of Castillo de Real Fuerza
Fortress de la real Fuerza, Castillo de Real Fuerza
Cuba, Havana
Castillo de Real Fuerza is the oldest fortress on the entire island. It was built between 1558 and 1577.
The walls of the castle, 6 meters thick and 10 meters high, were designed to protect the then young city from pirate and, in principle, enemy attacks and shelling. The main reserves of gold, silver, precious stones and other material assets were located here. The fortress itself has the shape of a square, divided into 9 parts and completed by four bastions. And, like all large castles, a wide moat filled with water was dug around Real Fuerza. One of the distinguishing features of the fortress is the bronze sculpture of La Giraldilla, symbolizing Havana and granted to the fortress in 1632.
