Jingshan (literally: View from the mountain) is an artificial hill. The park is located north of the Forbidden City on the central axis of Beijing. Originally an imperial garden, it is now a public park.
The artificial hill, 45.7 meters high, was built by Yong-le during the Ming Dynasty entirely from soil dug when digging ditches for the imperial palace. It is especially impressive that all this was created exclusively through manual labor. Jingshan is made up of five distinct hills, each with a Chinese-style palace at the top.
Today, Jingshan is especially popular among the elderly. Here they gather and engage in dancing, singing and other cultural activities.
