The National Museum of China is the largest museum in the country (70,000 sq.m.) and the most visited museum in the world. It is located in the eastern part of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, is under the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and aims to preserve and promote Chinese art and history.
The museum combines two other museums that were already located in the building of the institution before the merger in 2003. These were the Museum of the Chinese Revolution in the north wing of the building and the National Museum of Chinese History in the south wing. Both began to function in 1959, when a separate building was built for them on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the PRC. It is 313 meters long, 149 meters wide and 40 meters high, the facade is decorated with 11 columns.
The museum stores more than 620 thousand valuable exhibits covering the history of the state for more than 5000 years. Some exhibits are related to prehistoric times, for example, the Yuanmou Man, 1.7 million years old.
