The Summer Imperial Palace is one of the most fascinating palace and park complexes in China. It is also known as the Garden of Peace and Harmony. The palace is located in the northwestern part of Beijing on vast territories, most of which are occupied by the beautiful Kunming Lake. The history of the Summer Palace dates back about 800 years, during which it was subjected to significant destruction several times. It remained in a semi-abandoned state for quite some time, until in the 19th century, Empress Cixi spent a significant part of the navy's funds to restore the palace and make it her residence.→
