Tianning Temple is a Buddhist temple in the Xuanwu region. The temple houses the Tianning Temple Pagoda built in the 12th century. The pagoda imitates the style of ancient wooden pagodas, featuring a wooden dougong (decorative bracing of beams). She stands on a wide platform that represents Mount Sumeru. The design of the pagoda inspired the Ming builders to build the Qishou Temple Pagoda in 1576. The pagoda has been perfectly preserved since the 12th century.
Architectural historian Liang Sicheng, a pioneer in the study of ancient Chinese wooden architecture, called the Tianning Temple Pagoda a pure example of medieval Chinese architecture.
