Sculpture Dying Lion

Lion Monument, Lowendenkmal
Switzerland, Lucerne
The Dying Lion is a sculptural composition designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1821. It is dedicated to the courage of the Swiss Guards, who gave their lives for the French king on August 10, 1792, while resisting the assault on the Tuileries.

The composition is a high relief carved in a rock ledge, above it is the inscription “Loyalty and courage of the Swiss”, below it are the Latin numbers 760 and 350 (the number of dead and surviving soldiers), and at the foot of the monument are carved the names of all the fallen.

The dying lion is located in the heart of Lucerne. The place is sad, quiet and unusual. The inscription above the sculpture reads: "Glory to the loyalty and courage of the Swiss. " This is a monument to the fallen Swiss guards who fought for Switzerland. By the way, the names of all the officers who died for the Motherland are carved on the stone below. I think this is one of the most soulful and touching masterpieces made of stone, worthy of your attention.
