Gooderham building

The Gooderham Building or Iron House was built in 1892 as the office of a distillery company owned by the Gooderham family. The five-story building in the Gothic Romanesque style was built in the form of a narrow triangular wedge at the intersection of three streets. It was equipped with a manual elevator - the first in Toronto, a tunnel was dug for a safe visit to the bank located across the street. On the back wall of the Iron House, Canadian artist Derek Michael Besant mirrored the house opposite. This creates an optical illusion of reality and makes the building visually wider. The Gooderham House was listed as a Historic Monument in Ontario in 1975.
