City Hall is a complex of Toronto City Hall buildings on Nathan Philips Square, built in 1965 to replace the first city hall building, the Old City Hall, erected in 1899. City Hall consists of towers, curved in cross-section, 27 and 20 stories high, and a round-shaped city council building. From above, the complex resembles an eye and that is why it is unofficially called “The Eye of the City Hall”. Fountains work in front of the City Hall in summer, and a skating rink is flooded in winter. Traditionally, New Year's holidays with fireworks and musical performances are held in the building and in front of the City Hall.
