Notre Dame Cathedral of Montreal
Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal's Notre-Dame Basilica, Notre-Dame Basilica de Montreal
Canada, Montreal
Notre Dame Cathedral, located in the Old Town of Montreal, was built in 1872, on the site of a dilapidated two hundred year old church, consecrated in honor of Our Lady. The Neo-Gothic basilica, with two 70-meter bell towers and the largest bell in the North American continent weighing 11 tons, delights with its interior, which includes paintings, polychrome carvings, unique stained glass windows, statuettes and a stunning carved altar.
The special pride of the cathedral is the 7000-pipe organ and the magnificent church choir. The cathedral hosts both wedding ceremonies and funeral ceremonies for famous people in Canada. The magnificent acoustics of the temple allows concerts of choral and classical music to be held here. Entrance to Notre Dame Cathedral is free, but tickets are required for themed tours of the cathedral.
