Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmel
Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Monte do Carmo, Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmel, Old Cathedral
Brazil, Rio de Janeiro
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmel was built in the second half of the 18th century in the neo-Baroque style, with rococo elements in the interior and with carved rosewood furniture. The facade of the church is decorated with two towers, between which there is a large forged cross. The Carmelite Church in 1808 became the cathedral where Brazilian emperors were crowned, and remained so until 1976, when the new cathedral of Rio de Janeiro became the new Cathedral of St. Sebastian. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmel, or the Old Cathedral, is the city's cathedral cathedral. Weddings, baptisms and other religious ceremonies are held here. The remains of the discoverer of Brazil, Pedro Alvaris Cabral, are preserved in the temple.
