Beach and Copacabana area
Copacabana
Brazil, Rio de Janeiro
Copacabana is a beach and urban area of the same name in Rio de Janeiro. The main street of the area is Avenida Atlântica - "Atlantic Street", stretching along the beach for 4 km. In 1892, thanks to a tunnel through the mountain range and the construction of a tram line from the city center, the Copacabana area with its beach became popular among the people of Rio de Janeiro.
Of the interesting buildings of the area, one can note the former Copacabana Fort (Forte de Copacabana), built in 1919 at the southern end of the beach, which now houses a military museum. Another historic building adjacent to the beach is the reconstructed building of the Copacabana Palace Hotel.
Copacabana Beach is the most famous beach in Brazil, with white sand, night lighting, sports fields, live concerts of pop stars. It is the site of a mass celebration of the New Year in Rio, when up to two million people gather here on the night of December 31 to January 1.
