The Selarona Stairs start in the Lapa area and lead up to the hilltop monastery in the
Santa Teresa area. Chilean sculptor Jorge Selarón, who lived nearby for 23 years until his mysterious death in 2013, decorated the steps and side walls of the stairs with tiles and colored tiles from antique shops, pieces of mirrors, slightly defective tiles from construction sites and buildings to be demolished. Then tourists from different parts of the world, more than 60 countries, began to bring such materials to him. Now more than 2,000 tiles are placed on 250 steps of a 125-meter long staircase.
