Sveti Aleksandar Nevski is the most famous church in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
The cathedral was erected in memory of the Russian soldiers who fell in the battles for the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke. This monumental Orthodox church, the largest in the Balkans, has become a kind of symbol of the country's liberation. Its golden domes are visible from afar. Not only the exterior, but also the interior impresses with the splendor of finishes: Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, African alabaster. Well-known Russian and Bulgarian artists worked on decorating the cathedral.
Two icons of the iconostasis were painted by V. M. Vasnetsov. The royal and episcopal thrones of the cathedral, the altar barrier and many other elements of the interior are distinguished by the exceptional richness of decoration.
It is not allowed to take pictures inside, which is a pity. Awesome!!!
You can shoot only in the crypt of the cathedral, where stunning icons are exhibited, taken from different regions of Bulgaria.
