Gravensteen Castle

Gravensteen, Gravensteen Castle
Belgium, Ghent
Gravensteen is the best-preserved medieval castle in Flanders. Stone Gravensteen was built in 1180 on the site of an old wooden fortress and was the refuge-residence of the counts of Flanders. After the transfer of the residence of the then ruling Count Louis II of Malsky to another place, in 1353 a mint was opened in the castle, then the court sat here, it also served as a prison, a textile factory and a hostel for its workers. In 1888, the city council bought the castle from private hands and restored it in 1893-1907. Currently, the castle is open to the public, there is a museum of justice and weapons, which presents instruments of torture and a collection of historical weapons. The castle is a popular venue for solemn wedding ceremonies.

Right in the center of the city, a powerful stone structure rises on the water surface. Everyone takes pictures, the most beautiful views are from the bridge. There is an entrance fee to the castle. The internal contents are rather weak, as in many medieval castles. You have to admire the stone)) for the most part just empty rooms, only one displays a set of armor and weapons. But it’s interesting to wander around, especially if you take an audio guide. Unfortunately, the choice of languages is not large.
