Carmelite monastery

Kloosterkerk van de Ongeschoeide Karmelieten
Belgium, Ghent
The Monastery Church of the Carmelite Fathers is a church building in the Belgian city of Ghent. The church was built by the Discalced Carmelites, who settled in the city since 1651.
The church is dedicated to Saint Joseph and Saint Leopold III of Austria.
The high altar, pulpit and confessionals show uniformity. The confessionals are connected by wooden decorative panels.
History of the construction of the church
The church was built in a style that represents a transition between Baroque and Classicism. White sandstone was used as building materials. The architect of the church was a lay Carmelite brother, Leonardus van Langenhove. Construction was completed in 1712, and the final consecration followed in 1714. It is a church with ten Tuscan columns, the central limit of which continues with the choir. The main altar is decorated with marble of various colors and partly gilded.
Above the main altar hangs the painting “The Veil of St. Joseph” by Victor Janssens (1658-1736).
In 1797, the buildings of the church and monastery were occupied by French revolutionaries. The church was reopened for worship in 1801. The monastery buildings were rented out and could resume their original function only in 1845-1848. The monastery church has been a protected monument since 1961. The restoration of the church took place from 1974 to 1979.
Under the church there is a crypt in which the remains of monks and benefactors were found during work in 1978. There is also a publishing house and a bookstore on the territory of the monastery.

The Carmelite monks have long been distinguished by their amazing strictness in their way of life and order of life. The monastery includes a medieval church, several monastic premises and a large garden. But only the church is accessible to tourists. It is possible, with the permission of the monk, to visit the local garden, but, unfortunately, I was not able to do this. The monastery attracts the attention of not only believers, but also tourists. The church is the largest Baroque church in the city.
