The Abbey of Cambres is located on the territory of the commune of Ixelles. It was founded in the 13th century. as a Cistercian convent and existed in this status until the French Revolution. After the closure of the monastery, various institutions and even military barracks were located on the territory of the abbey at different times, which brought him considerable damage. Since 1921, restoration work has been started here. Currently, the Higher Architectural Institute - Cambrai, the Belgian National Geographic Society and the School of Visual Arts work on the territory of the Abbey of Cambrai, and part of the premises continues to be used by the Catholic Church. The architectural ensemble of the Abbey of Cambrai is designed mainly in the medieval and Renaissance styles and consists of a Gothic church, a small chapel of St. Boniface, a refectory, and a number of outbuildings. The buildings of the abbey are surrounded by picturesque French gardens.
