On this square "the administrative, judicial and religious heart of the city beat. " From all sides the square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, except for one side, where the square is now located. Where trees grow today, the Cathedral of Saint Donatius once stood, which was destroyed during the French Revolution. It is on this square that the Basilica of the Holy Blood is located, one of the main attractions of the city. To the left of the basilica, stands out with its beautiful 14th-century faç ade, the City Hall, which is the oldest in Flanders. The foundation of this Gothic town hall was laid in 1376 by Count Lodewijk van Male. On the facade, in niches, there are copies of statues of biblical characters and figures of Flemish historical figures. On the second floor of the town hall you can visit the Gothic hall. Wooden hanging vaults were erected in the 14th century.
The neo-gothic wall painting was created at the end of the 19th century and gives the hall a majestic and solemn look. Also on the square are the old office of the court and the residence of Prevost.
