Cathedral of Christ the Savior

St. Salvator's Cathedral
Belgium, Brugge
Saint Salvator's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Bruges, Belgium. The cathedral is dedicated to Verresen Saligmaker (in Dutch - "resurrected savior", Latin version - "savior") and Saint Donatius of Reims.
Since the 10th century, Saint Salvator has been an ordinary parish church. In 1116 a fire destroyed the building, and in 1127 construction began on a new larger Romanesque church. In 1250, the construction of the current church began, which lasted for about a century. Now it is the main church of the city, which received the status of a cathedral in the 19th century. Until that time, the central religious building of the city was the Cathedral of St. Donatian, located in the very center of Bruges, opposite the town hall. At the end of the 18th century, the French occupiers of Bruges expelled the Bishop of Bruges and destroyed the Cathedral of Saint Donatian, which was his residence.
In 1834, shortly after the independence of Belgium in 1830, a new bishop was appointed in Bruges and Saint Salvator's was given cathedral status. In 1839, the roof of the cathedral collapsed during a fire. The oldest surviving part of the roof, dating from the 12th century, formed the basis of a new mighty tower. The neo-Romanesque western tower, resembling a fortress, is 99 meters high.
Inside the cathedral are many works of art that were originally kept in its ruined predecessor - the Cathedral of St. Donatian. The wall hangings that can be seen at the entrance to the church were made in Brussels in 1731. In the choir, you can still admire the original 16th-century podium.
The organ of the cathedral was originally built in 1717–1719. and expanded and rebuilt three times in the 20th century.

The cathedral was built between the 11th and 15th centuries. Until the 19th century, it was an ordinary city church, and the main cathedral of the city was the Cathedral of St. Donatos, which was located on the central square of the city directly opposite the town hall. But after its destruction at the end of the 18th century by French troops, and then the recognition of the independence of Belgium in 1834, the status of the cathedral was assigned to the church of St. Salvator. The residence of the new bishop was created here.
