The open-air museum of petroglyphs - that's what Gobustan is called - is a mountainous place in the southeast of the Greater Caucasus Range, located about 65 km from Baku. It was here that the ancient sites of primitive people were found, who left behind a lot of rock carvings - petroglyphs. These primitive monuments of art reflect the culture, economy, worldview, customs and traditions of ancient people. After, quite by chance, in the 30s of the XX century, unusual drawings were discovered on the rocks, more than 6 thousand of them have already been identified. Ancient primitive dwellings were found - caves and parking lots, more than 100 thousand objects of material culture. Gobustan petroglyphs belong to different eras. Basically, they date back to periods from the 10th - 18th millennium BC. e. and up to the Middle Ages of our era. But scientists suggest that among these drawings there are more ancient ones, more than 20 thousand years BC. e.
From these drawings, one can clearly trace the entire evolution of man. Scenes of mountain goat hunting, ritual dances with spears - this is the most ancient period of time, the Mesolithic era, battle scenes, scenes of collective labor, harvest, women at the hearth. Rock carvings forever captured the drawings of animals that lived here for the last 20 thousand years - goitered gazelles, wild goats, deer, wild pigs, horses, lions, images of birds, fish, snakes, lizards and insects.

Among the many rock carvings, images of boats with rowers attract attention, which indicates that the ancient settlers were good sailors.
