Mount Yanardag

Burning Mountain, Fire Mountain, Yanar Dag, Yanar Dag
Azerbaijan, Baku
Mount Yanardag is a hill located 1 km from the village of Digah and 17 km from Baku. Yanardag is called the "Burning Mountain" because of the burning natural gas escaping at the foot and on the slopes. The fire can go out during rain or strong winds, but soon flares up again due to interaction with atmospheric oxygen. This phenomenon has been observed for many hundreds of years, it was mentioned by the famous traveler Marco Polo. At the top of the mountain there is also a cave "Wolf's Gate" with paintings on the walls - one of the ancient sites of primitive people.

Yanardag has become a place where many tourists and pilgrims from all over the world come to look at the fire or meditate. The best view of the flaming hill opens at dusk. In 2007, the state historical, cultural and natural reserve "Yanardag" was created here.

"Yanar-dag", translated from Azerbaijani as "burning mountain", is a natural eternal fire that burns in places where natural gas comes out near Baku. This attraction is located 25 km from the city center. The country of Azerbaijan, that is, the "Land of Fires", was named so precisely because of the numerous exits of fire that escaped from the bowels of the earth. It is advisable to go to Yanar-Dag in the evening hours.
