The 30-hectare Royal Botanic Gardens is located on the shores of Farmers Bay in Sydney Bay. It is divided into 14 thematic areas: rainforest, rose garden, cactus and succulent garden, oriental garden, South Wales herbarium display, collection of rare endangered plants, Australian pioneer garden, palm grove, Australian rainforest collection, herb garden, rock garden with local alpine plants, camellia garden, fern greenhouse. The garden is home to many small animals and birds, including a variety of parrots, white Australian ibises, koalas, and opossums. The Botanical Garden is still home to a large colony of grey-headed flying foxes.
