Central railway station is the largest railway station in Australia, the terminus for all intercity rail traffic, it also serves almost all suburban lines. Opened in 1855, the station was a small corrugated iron building and a wooden platform. With the development of passenger traffic, in 1874 the station acquired a brick building and two platforms.
The modern station was put into operation on August 4, 1906. The 75-meter tower of the station in the classical style with a clock was attached to the main building in March 1921.
