The National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and largest art gallery in Australia, opened in 1861 during the Gold Rush when Victoria became the richest state in the country. The gallery presents more than 65,000 exhibits: works by famous painters, ancient Egyptian artifacts, vases from Greece, European historical ceramics, cultural and everyday objects of Australian aborigines, works by Australian artists. In 2003, the gallery's art collections were divided into two collections - the Gallery of International Art and the Ian Potter Center, which are located in different buildings.
