Melbourne Zoo
Australia, Melbourne
The Melbourne Zoo was established in 1862 and today is one of the largest zoos in the world, covering an area of 22 hectares. Initially, the zoo acclimatized and quarantined domestic animals after they were brought to Australia. Starting in 1870, the zoo began to acquire tigers, lions, monkeys and other exotic animals. Now it is home to 350 species of animals from different parts of the world. In January 2010, a baby elephant named Mali was born at the zoo for the first time since its inception. The entire territory of the park is divided into bioclimatic zones in order to optimally separate flora and fauna according to habitat conditions.
