Captain Cook's Cottage
Captain Cook's Cottage
Australia, Melbourne
The Captain James Cook House Museum is located in Fitzroy Park and is one of Melbourne's main attractions. The cottage was built by Cook's father, where the childhood of the future captain passed. In 1934, the house was purchased by Sir Russell Grimwade and donated to the Australian people for the 100th anniversary of the state of Victoria. The cottage was dismantled, packed in boxes and barrels and transported to Melbourne, where it was assembled and restored. Near the house they laid out the same garden that existed in England in the 18th century, using ivy brought from there. On October 17, 1978, on the day of the 250th anniversary of the birth of James Cook, the house-museum was inaugurated by the Australian Governor General.
