The Salzburg Residence on
Residenzplatz is a sumptuous baroque palace that housed the Salzburg archbishops from 1120 to 1816. The interior decoration of the palace with the use of plafond painting, fresco, plaster finish, embroidery and inlay, marble makes an indelible impression on visitors. On the 4th floor of the Residence there is the Art Gallery, opened in 1923, with a large collection of paintings by European masters of the 16th-19th centuries, belonging to the Dutch, German, French, Italian and Austrian schools of painting. In addition, the gallery regularly hosts traveling exhibitions and special exhibitions on the history of painting.
