Looking at the Parliament building from the Ringstrasse, the first thing that catches your eye is the impressive fountain in front. Its distinctive feature is the statue of Athena Pallas, the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategy, war and peace. In her right hand she holds Nick, the goddess of Victory, and in her left is a spear - both symbols are often associated with Athena.
The allegories "Executive Power" and "Legislative Power" sit to the left and right of the statue. They emphasize the basic principle of democratic constitutions and the rule of law - the separation of powers between parliament and the executive. The "legislature" carries the table of law in its hands, while the "executive branch" has the sword of justice and scales.
The building with a protruding central building and a double Corinthian portico, with two wings, completed by four pavilions in the form of ancient temples, is very impressive. The house was built in 1874-1884 in the neo-Greek style.
The architect Theophilus von Hansen, who lived in Greece for many years, was well versed in and loved ancient architecture. In Athens, he built the buildings of the Academy of Sciences and the National Library. According to the architect's plan, the building of the parliament building used building materials from all regions that were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
