The Military History Museum was conceived by Emperor Franz Joseph as a symbol of the power of the Austrian army and empire. The architect Theophil von Hansen implemented this project. The museum was opened on the territory of the Vienna Arsenal in 1869 and is dedicated to the military history of Austria from the 16th century. until 1955. The museum building is divided into five parts: the main hall of fame for the great Austrian generals and four halls for various exhibitions, which are divided into historical periods and thematic blocks.
The basis of the exposition of the museum of military history is made up of items from the imperial weapons collections. In this museum you can see not only military vehicles, cannons and samples of weapons from different times, but also military documents, paraphernalia, uniforms, banners, coins and paintings of military history.
