Founded in 1365, it is one of the oldest and largest universities in Europe. About 9.000 students study here. The university offers more than 130 courses to choose from. In addition to the official name, the institution is called Hauptuni (German: Hauptuni - Main University). The huge main building of the university with an arcaded inner courtyard and eight other courtyards was erected in 1877-1884 by architect Heinrich von Ferstel. A sculptural group on the pediment depicts the birth of Minerva.
