The opera house itself was built in 1863-1869 and it became one of the first ceremonial houses on the recently laid Ringstrasse. The authors of the project of the then Imperial and Royal Court Opera House in the style of the French Renaissance, were architects August Sicard von Zicardsburg and Edward Van der Neel. But they did not live to see the opening of their brainchild in 1869. Both the press and the public accused the architects of extravagance, lack of taste and excessive pomp.
