Vienna State Opera

Wiener Staatsoper, Vienna State Opera
Austria, Vienna
The Vienna State Opera (until 1918 the Vienna Court Opera) is the largest opera house in Austria, a center of musical culture.

The opera house was opened in 1869. During the years of occupation of Vienna by the Nazis (1938-45), the theater was in decline. In 1945, during the bombing of Vienna, the theater building was destroyed. The building was restored only in 1955. At the same time, the tradition of annual balls at the Vienna Opera was renewed.

The opera house itself was built in 1863-1869 and it became one of the first ceremonial houses on the recently laid Ringstrasse. The authors of the project of the then Imperial and Royal Court Opera House in the style of the French Renaissance, were architects August Sicard von Zicardsburg and Edward Van der Neel. But they did not live to see the opening of their brainchild in 1869. Both the press and the public accused the architects of extravagance, lack of taste and excessive pomp. Even the Kaiser expressed his negative opinion.

Walking around Vienna, the only obsessive (if I may say so) advertising is the endless invitations to the opera with the distribution of bright flyers by people in pompous medieval costumes. The opera is very suitable for the city, it is its face and soul! The atmosphere in it is regal, saturated with art and expensive perfumes. If you are going to Vienna, try to buy tickets for the opera. Find yourself in this royal hall, breathe in this air. A person with any income level has the opportunity to visit the opera.

Tickets to the opera are best bought on the website of the opera itself and well in advance. If it is important for you to just get to the opera, and not to any particular performance or action, then you can buy standing tickets for 3-4 euros 15-20 minutes before the start. We also enjoyed the backstage tour of the Vienna Opera. In Russian, it is held only at 14.00 (the schedule is to the left of the main entrance, it seems), the rest of the time the tour can be visited in English or German and get backstage at the Vienna Opera, or to the rehearsal of the performance.

If you do not have the opportunity to get to the evening performance at the Vienna Opera, but you want to look behind the scenes, there is an option for you to tour the opera building. Tours are held every day (available in Russian), but it is better to check the time either on the opera website before the visit, or already on site - the schedule is posted around the corner from the main entrance. The cost of the tour is 7.50 euros. Duration about 40 minutes. You will be told about the tragic fate of the architect of the opera, who hanged himself after criticism of his offspring by Emperor Franz Joseph.

The Vienna State Opera is known not only in Austria and Europe....Avid theater-goers from all over the world dream of seeing a performance at the Vienna Opera. The air of Vienna is literally saturated with the music of famous composers. Mozart and Beethoven, Schubert, Johann Strauss and many others wrote their music here...If you are not a theatergoer, but would like to get inside, you can get into the opera on a tour. The pleasure of looking behind the scenes will cost about 20 euros. Externally, the building is also very beautiful, especially at night, in the yellow night illumination.
