Heldenplatz square

Heroes' Square, Heldenplatz, Heroes' Square
Austria, Vienna
Heldenplatz was built in the 19th century, during the reign of Franz Joseph. However, the grandiose project of its construction was not fully realized. Heroes' Square served as the outer palace square Hofburg residence, so parades and other festive events were repeatedly held on it. The square is surrounded by the buildings of the New Palace, the Leopoldovsky Corps and, which gave it its name, the external gates of Heldentor (Portal of Heroes). In its center there are two bronze equestrian statues of outstanding generals - Archduke Charles and Prince Eugene of Savoy. Heldenplatz is famous for the fact that it was here on the balcony of the New Castle that Adolf Hitler proclaimed the Anschluss of Germany and Austria in 1938.

The entrance to the square through Heldentor is the "Heroes' Gate", reminiscent of the fallen Austrian soldiers (another name - Burgtor, "City Gate"). The square is decorated with two equestrian monuments to famous emperors of the empire - Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles.
