The front hall of the
National Library is one of the most beautiful historical libraries in the world. The hall was built by order of Emperor Charles VI for his palace library in the 18th century. architect Johann von Erlach in the Baroque style. The State Hall is the central part of the imperial library and part of the
Hofburg residence. This hall is richly decorated with columns, carved oak bookcases, statues, frescoes, globes, and topped with a huge dome. In the center of the main hall is a huge marble statue of Charles VI. Today, the main hall of the library holds about 200,000 books published from 1501 to 1850.
