Monument to Emperor Joseph II

Austria, Vienna
The monument is located in the historical center of the Austrian capital, on the Josefsplatz square, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the city. Surrounded by majestic buildings of the 18th century, the monument "decorates" the entrance to the building of the National Library. Made by the famous Austrian sculptor Franz Anton von Zauner, the monument to the reforming emperor Joseph II was inaugurated in 1807. It is noteworthy that another Austrian emperor, Franz II, the nephew of Joseph II, acted as the customer of the monument. The monument is a massive pedestal on which stands the figure of an outstanding statesman on horseback. The famous equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome can be seen in the ancient Roman attire of the emperor and the hand majestically stretched forward.

The model for the monument was the equestrian sculpture of Marcus Aurelius in Rome. The author of the project is sculptor Franz Anton Sauner. He received an order in 1795 and in 1797 presented a project of the monument. The manufacturing and installation process took 10 years. Statues of the emperor (1800) and a horse (1803) were made separately at the foundry. This was the first such work in Austria, earlier such sculptures were cast in France. The emperor in Roman clothes and shoes sits on a horse without a saddle and stirrups.
