The fountain is dedicated to the wedding of St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its history dates back to 1702, from the promise of Emperor Leopold I to erect a monument in gratitude for the return of his son Joseph from captivity. The emperor died, Joseph was redeemed from captivity in 1705, and in 1706 a wooden monument (not a fountain) designed by the court architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach stood in the square.

In 1725, it was dismantled and work began on the creation of a stone monument-fountain under the direction of architect Elias Hugel. The cornerstone was laid in 1729, and on March 12.1732, the finished monument was consecrated by Cardinal Count Sigismund Kollonitz. The overall project was developed by Josef Emmanuel Fischer von Erlach. Sculptures of angels and a sculptural group of the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the high priest - the work of Antonio Corradini. Canopy with symbols of the Trinity - the work of Johann Baptist Divallo.
Lorenzo Mattieli designed two round pools with fountains.

Four profiled columns of the Corinthian order support a canopy with the symbols of the Trinity. In the center - a sculptural group depicting the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and the high priest. Sculptures of angels and decorative vases are on the four corners of the base. On three sides of the base - bas-reliefs depicting the worship of shepherds, the worship of kings and performances in the temple. On the fourth side there is a commemorative inscription. Damaged by Allied bombing in 1944, the fountain was rebuilt in 1950-1955, and the young sculptor Wader Bertoni recreated the ruined head of the Virgin Mary.
