Urania Palace

Austria, Vienna
Art Nouveau building located in the center of the Austrian capital. Includes an educational center and an observatory. The building of an unusual shape was built at the beginning of the 20th century according to the project of the famous Italian and Austrian architect Max Fabiani and was solemnly opened by the Emperor of the Austrian Empire Franz Joseph the First. The palace got its name in honor of the educational society of the same name, for which the building was intended. At one time, Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Tomas Garrig Masaryk and other prominent personalities lectured here. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War, in particular, the dome of the observatory was completely destroyed, but as a result of the reconstruction of 1957, it acquired its original appearance. The last renovation work in the Urania Palace was made in 2003. Every year the building serves as the venue for the Viennale Film Festival.

The Art Nouveau building was designed in 1910 by architect Max Fabiani to house a public educational center with an observatory. It was inaugurated by Emperor Franz Joseph I, as evidenced by the inscription on the facade. Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Tomasz Harrig Masaryk and other famous people of that time gave lectures here. The building is named Urania after the muse - the patron saint of astronomy. During World War II, the building was damaged by Allied bombing and the dome of the observatory was completely destroyed.
