Church of Saint Augustine

Augustinerkirche, Augustinian Church, Augustinerkirche
Austria, Vienna
St. Augustine's Church in Vienna is a Gothic church on Josefplatz in the Inner City. The church was consecrated in 1349, and from 1634 to 1783 it was considered the court church of the Habsburgs. The treasure of the church is 54 silver urns with the hearts of many Habsburgs - from Ferdinand II to Franz Karl, father of Franz Joseph I. They are kept in the so-called "Crypt of Hearts" in St. George's Chapel.

St. Augustine's Church in Vienna is not only an architectural monument, but also a historical site with many important events in Austrian history. It was in this church that the weddings of Austrian empresses and emperors were held - Maria Theresa and Stephen of Lorraine, Elizabeth (Sissy) and Franz Joseph, Maria Louise and Napoleon. The church houses the heart of Napoleon II, as well as urns with the hearts of other rulers of the Habsburg dynasty of different historical periods (54 in total). A special place for this is called the "crypt of hearts".
