Who like it, and I personally liked this church the most in Vienna. There are so many architectural styles and influences intertwined in this church, from antique to Arabic, that it seems as if a multilingual choir has been frozen in the fireplace, begging God to save it from the plague. After all, the church was built in 1716-1737 by order of Emperor Charles VI, as a thank you for ridding Austria of the plague. The temple is consecrated in honor of Charles Borromeo, the patron saint of the emperor and protector against the plague.
The image of the temple turned out to be quite eclectic: in addition to the Italian Baroque style, it used elements of ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic architecture. For example, the two towers framing the main facade of the temple resemble typical minarets adorning Arab mosques. However, other sources claim that these towers were built in the image of the famous column of Trajan, located on the territory of the Roman Forum.
Another example of the merging of different cultures are the two side chapels, the lower parts of which are made in the Baroque style, and the domes resemble the roofs of Chinese pagodas. The elongated dome of the church evokes memories of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and the church itself resembles the main church of Constantinople - St. Sophia Cathedral.
The church is not quite unusual for Vienna and a bit oriental style immediately attracts attention and is especially beautiful in the dark, when the building turns on special lighting.
