Memorial complex "Concentration camp Mauthausen"

KZ-Gedenkstätte Mauthause, Mauthausen Memorial
Austria, Linz
The Mauthausen concentration camp was declared a memorial complex in 1949. It was one of the worst German death camps during World War II: about 90 thousand people were tortured and killed there (mostly Soviet prisoners of war and Polish citizens). Relatively many original buildings have been preserved in Mauthausen - these are barracks for prisoners, houses of SS workers, a camp hospital, a gas chamber and much more.
In the post-war period, a cemetery was laid out on the territory of the concentration camp, where the remains of the victims from the mass graves were transferred. Now there are museum exhibitions and many memorial monuments, plates, boards and monuments dedicated to various victims of the camp for political, social, ethnic and religious reasons. Recently, a new "Hall of Names" has also been opened at the Mauthausen Memorial, which contains the names of 81,000 identified dead prisoners of the main camp and its external branches.

The Mauthausen concentration camp was founded in 1938. It was built by prisoners of another concentration camp - Dachau. Initially, it was supposed to keep criminals there, but since 1939 the camp was transformed into a "labor" camp for political prisoners. During the war, it was replenished with prisoners of war of different nationalities. It was believed that granite was harvested here for buildings in Germany and Austria. On the inside, on the wall near the gate, in the place where the new arrivals lined up, there are memorial plaques in memory of groups and individual prisoners.
