Hofkirche church
The Hofkirche and the Emperor's Tomb
Austria, Innsbruck
The Hofkirche church was built in the middle of the 16th century as the mausoleum of Emperor Maximilian I. Later, his remains were reburied, and now the church contains only an empty memorial sarcophagus surrounded by 28 statues symbolizing the emperor's retinue. Because of these unusual black sculptures, the people called the Hofkirche church the church of "black people".
