Clock tower

Clock Tower Graz, Uhrturm
Austria, Graz
The clock tower, 28 meters high, located on the Schlossberg mountain, is one of the main symbols of Graz. The tower "survived" numerous raids of the Turks. In 1809, after unsuccessful attempts to take Schlossberg Castle, Napoleon ordered it to be blown up, but the tower was kept in exchange for a large ransom collected by local residents. The tower is decorated with a clock from 1712, which contains one of the oldest bells in Austria, created in 1382. Due to the fact that the tower is located on a hill, it is ideal for viewing city panoramas.

The clock tower, which dates back to 1265, is the only surviving part of the fortress on the Schlossberg mountain. Be sure to pay attention to the original clock face on the tower. At first there was only one hand showing the hours. Later, a minute hand was added, but it turned out to be shorter than the hour hand. Therefore, next to these "wrong clocks" there is an amazing feeling of time slowing down ... There is an interesting tradition in Graz - the first time lovers should kiss under the Clock Tower, then their love was long and happy.
