Noravank Monastery

Noravank
Armenia, Yeghegnadzor
The Norvavnk monastery complex was built on the site of a destroyed ancient church. It is located 122 km from Yerevan, not far from the town of Yeghegnadzor. Noravank was founded in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes, was the residence of the Armenian princes Orbelyans, and eventually became their family tomb.
The oldest church of the monastery is the Church of Surb Karapet, built in 1216-1227 by the decree of Prince Liparit Orbelyan. Particular attention should be paid to the bas-reliefs above the entrance and the window of the church with images of the Blessed Virgin with the Child in her arms and God the Father. The church houses the tomb of Prince Smbat Orbelyan.
The most majestic church of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin) was built in 1339. The construction of the church was financed by Prince Burtel Orbelyan, so the temple is also called "Burtelashen" ("built by Burtel"). It was built by the famous Armenian architect and sculptor Momik. Above the door there is a bas-relief depicting the Mother of God with the infant Christ and angels, and above the upper entrance - depicting Christ and the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul.
In 1275, the chapel of St. Grigor was added to the side of the Church of Surb Karapet. This modest rectangular building also contains the tombs of the Orbelian family. The walls on both sides of the altar are decorated with khachkars and images of doves.
In the Middle Ages, Noravank became a symbol of a new free life, and today the monastery is a unique cultural monument, a symbol of faith and fortitude of the Armenian people.

The monastery got its name in honor of the liberation of the Armenians from the yoke of the Seljuk Turks. In translation, Noravank means “new monastery”, which symbolized a new life. The complex offers an indescribable view of the steep red rocks and the winding gorge of the Arpi River. Surb Astvatsatsin (Virgin Mary) Church impresses with its architectural solutions. It is two-story, on the first floor there is a princely tomb, on the second - a chapel, where a narrow staircase without railings leads.
