If you went on an excursion to Vagharshapat, be sure to visit the archaeological reserve, on the territory of which the Zvartnots temple is located. Rather, there are ruins and reconstructed parts of the once majestic ancient Armenian temple. Looking at the models of this truly unique building, you understand how developed the architecture was in antiquity. Zvartnots consisted of three decreasing cylindrical parts placed on top of each other, crowned with a spherical cone. The walls of the building were multifaceted on the outside, and completely round on the inside. It was richly decorated from top to bottom with sculptural relief. The walls of the temple were decorated with bunches of grapes, pomegranate fruits, palm leaves, very finely carved geometric ornaments, wickerwork, and decorative elements. The columns, set next to the main pillars of the temple, were crowned with images of huge stone eagles.
A large palace was built not far from Zvartnots, of which little remains. The palace had two wings that were at right angles to each other. In the first wing there were living rooms and utility rooms. In the other wing there were cells and utility rooms, there were also baths. Not far from the palace was a winery with large stone vats for draining the squeezed grape juice. A giant sundial fan was excavated on the territory of the temple, and huge karases were also found.
The temple stood for more than three hundred years, after which it was destroyed by a strong earthquake. There were no particular attempts to restore Zvartnots. Over time, a huge hill formed on the site of the temple, from which only the remains of four pylons were visible.
In 1901, an Armenian monk began excavating the temple, and in 1904 the architect Toramanyan joined him, who, after carefully studying the ruins, drew up the first project for the restoration of Zvartnots. A few years later, archaeologists discovered ...a medieval model of Zvartnots!
All that is now on the territory of the temple is the ruins with some restored elements, the results of excavations and a museum where you will see various antiquities.

Zvartnots is easy to spot. Any minibus or bus, following from the bus station in Yerevan to Vagharshapat, passes by the gates of the temple. The temple itself is a bit far away, but the gate can be recognized by a large stele with an eagle at the top. Entrance from the track is paid, it costs about 700 AMD. There is a separate fee for photography. There are wastelands on the south side of the temple, you can try to enter from there without any tickets.
The temple starts at 10:00 and is open until 17:30 all days except Mondays.
