Erebuni

Erebuni Fortress, Erebuni Museum, Erebuni Museum
Armenia, Yerevan
The ancient fortress of Erebuni was discovered during archaeological excavations on a hill in the southeastern part of Yerevan. It is from here that the history of ancient Yerevan begins.
The city of Erebuni was one of the main cities of the state of Urartu. It consisted of a citadel on the top of the Arin-Berd hill, as well as city blocks located at the foot of the hill. The total area of the city was 200 hectares. Researchers believe that the location of Erebuni was chosen based on military-strategic considerations: from the Arin-Berd hill, both the Ararat valley and most of the roads passing in the region are clearly visible.
The fortress (citadel) of Erebuni had a triangular shape and occupied the top of the Arin-Berd hill, about 65 meters high. The total area of the citadel was about 8 hectares. The foundation of the fortress was built from basalt blocks, stacked on a leveled rock. The only entrance to the fortress was located at its southeastern part, where the main gates of the fortress were located. In their foundation in 1958, a cuneiform inscription of the Urartian king Argishti I was discovered, which testified to the beginning of the construction of the city of Erebuni in 782 BC.
The fortress was surrounded by three powerful rows of walls and included an architectural complex with a palace, religious and household buildings.
In April 2012, the Forbes magazine included the settlement of Erebuni in the list of "9 most ancient fortresses in the world."

When traveling to Yerevan, if possible, be sure to visit this place, where, according to legend, about 2700 years ago, the capital of today's Armenia was born. Here you can get an idea of what the ancient Armenian cities looked like. Fans of the dust of centuries and antiquity will be delighted! In addition, a great view of Yerevan and Ararat opens from here. They say that the name of the capital of Armenia Yerevan came precisely from the ancient name of the fortress - "Erebuni" The remains of the old fortress are located on the outskirts of Yerevan, easily accessible from the center by taxi.
