Monastery Khor Virap

Khor Virap Monastery
Armenia, Artashat
Khor Virap Monastery is located on a hill near the village of Pokr Vedi, 40 km from Yerevan and half a kilometer from the border with Turkey. In ancient times, this place was the city of Artashat - the ancient capital of Armenia, founded around 180 BC. From here began the baptism of Armenia - the first state that officially became Christian in 301 - before Rome.
The name of the monastery is translated as “deep pit”, because it was built over an underground prison, in which, according to legend, the Armenian king Trdat III kept the Christian ascetic St. Gregory the Illuminator.
The entrance to the prison, up to 6 meters deep, is located in the chapel of St. Gregory, built in 642 and rebuilt in 1661. On the territory of the monastery, surrounded by a powerful stone wall, there is a functioning church of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin), built in the middle of the 17th century.
Khor Virap Monastery is one of the most famous places of pilgrimage for Armenians around the world. Its territory offers a magnificent view of the valley, in clear weather the famous Mount Ararat is clearly visible.
