Fortress of Elbasan

Castle Elbasan, Elbasani
Albania, Tirana
The city of Elbasan is located 50 km southeast of Tirana.
During the reign of the Ottoman Empire, mosques, baths, a huge oriental bazaar and bazaar gates, a fortress were erected here. Some of them have survived to this day. Elbasan got its name during the reign of Sultan Mehmet II. Translated from Turkish, it means "Conquered Country".
The main attraction of Elbasan is deservedly considered a fortress of 26 towers, built in the 15th century to protect the city. Despite the fact that in our time part of the towers is destroyed, this magnificent eastern castle functions as a museum.

About the city Elbasan is a small city, although it is considered one of the largest in Albania. It closely adjoins houses completely different in style and age. Watching the newest mansion and next to it a half-ruined building is extremely strange. Fortress Exactly what we came for. Unfortunately, only two walls, several towers and the Market Gate have survived to this day. Inside the fortress there is a residential quarter and a large respectable restaurant where you can taste delicious local cuisine.
