In the 5th century AD e. in the city of Onchesmus (now Saranda), a large and rich synagogue was erected. Until now, the history and reasons for its construction are not exactly known. According to one of the most plausible versions, the Jewish settlements located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea were part of the trade route at the end of the ancient period. Onchesmus is located just on the trade route between Corfu, Constantinople and Thessaloniki. From fragments of found Jewish texts, it is known that the community located here interacted with the Italian Hebrew community, which was located near Lecce. Also on the territory of the synagogue was found a tombstone with an inscription dedicated to the deceased daughter of the head of the local community.
To this day, only floors with numerous mosaics depicting animals and Jewish symbols have remained from the building.

Ruins of the Synagogue

We stumbled upon this attraction by accident. The ruins of the ancient Synagogue are located right in the bustling center of Saranda. This is a magnificent example of ancient culture, carefully guarded, surrounded by a fence. There is a historical reference in two languages. Of course, little has survived to our time, but the rest of the foundation is impressive.→
