The picturesque Al Jahili Fort is one of the most ancient fortresses in the UAE. You can see this landmark depicted on the back of the 50 dirham banknote. The fortress was built in 1891 to protect the city of Al Ain. For some time, it housed the armed forces that protected the mountain roads, was the headquarters of the Scouts of Trucial Oman, and also served as the residence of the local governor. Currently, the Al Jahili fortress, surrounded by beautiful gardens, is open to visitors. Women visiting the fortress must wear flat shoes to avoid damaging the floors.→
