This is our third visit to Long Beach.
The previous two times were in 2013 and 2015. Previously, everything was quite normal, so we decided not to seek adventure, but flew to the same hotel.
It turned out that the decision was unsuccessful.
Or maybe the downtime due to the lockdown affected the situation and the hotel staff or something, but this visit was unforgettable.
Settled half a day, although the hotel had a maximum of 20 guests. All rooms are empty. But still they went around in circles, dragging their feet, trying in every possible way to get a bribe for the settlement before 14:00.
This hotel was not famous for its cleanliness and order before the lockdown, but now it is a hell of a hell. Plaster from the ceiling falls in front of the astonished guests.
Everything smelled, covered with mold and fungus. Food - you have not seen this anywhere, I'm sure. The same ten trays with the same slop every day. Even penny-priced bananas were given only for breakfast and no more than three bananas for 20 people. So that everyone had enough fruit, they were cut into small pieces, so small that they could only be taken with a toothpick. This is absolutely no humour. There was an impression that the staff mocks the guests and shoots this trash with a hidden camera. Fried chicken literally stank of rotten meat. I don’t even know what to say about the condition of the rooms, beds, shower room. Literally everything stinks in two years of inactivity.
Well, in order to consolidate the pleasure of the rest, the staff climbed into our safe and stole $ 200. It should be noted that not everything was taken. They left a little for us too, probably hoping that the theft would go unnoticed. The management of the hotel is clearly in proportion with those who steal, because there was absolutely no reaction to the fact of theft. Nobody cares.
When I said that I would call the police, the manager began to convince me that I would not be able to fly home until the end of the investigation. I was just dumbfounded by such a move. I went to the police myself, wrote a statement, but even there the whole story only amused the policemen.
Later, local taxi drivers said that money is stolen regularly in Long Beach and should not be surprised.
We told our story to the neighbors, and they say: “We also lost $100 from the safe. ” As a result - decide to go to Long Beach, stock up on smecta, rehydron and carry everything of value in your pockets, do not leave anything of value in the room. Have a good rest in beautiful Sri Lanka!
The ocean conquers you at first sight, all the days the lines sounded in your head: “. . . The ocean will boil, raise a howl, pour onto an empty shore, splash in a noisy run... ”
During the entire stay, the staff did not bother. They lived like on a desert island, chipmunks run around the territory, climb onto the balcony. Across the road, along the railway tracks, peacocks walk with whole families, we saw a mongoose in the village, and a monitor lizard gracefully crossed the road for us.
The hotel only took breakfast. They are hearty and delicious! Husband loved the fried bacon.
There were few tourists due to recent events in the world. Hotel guides cannot recruit groups for excursions. Having read a lot of reviews before the trip, we completely entrusted our leisure time to the local beach-boy (guide) Kumar, which we never regretted. Traveled half the island with him. Since now there are few tourists, the tour turned out to be individual for us. My husband and I, Kumar's guide and driver in a cool Honda car.
For the first time in the city of Galle, we went by tuk-tuk for 200 rupees (a ridiculous amount) from Kumar. We walked around the city, visited the fortress, breathed in the smell of the fish market. And back, any tuk-tuk driver asked us 1000 rupees, we barely agreed for 800. There is a huge supermarket in Galle with a large selection of tea, toothpaste, cosmetics and various sweets. Everywhere prices are reasonable. The next time we went to Galle by tuk-tuk for 400 rupees both ways (thanks Kumar) with a stop at the currency exchange office at a favorable rate. A tuk-tuk was waiting for us near the supermarket. Having spent a little time, we quickly drove, successfully skimped, and spent the whole day on our beach.
We would stay at this hotel again. It is for those who do not like noisy beaches, but appreciate the silence and beauty of nature. And she's amazing here!
And why they don’t write: they don’t clean the room (we were cleaned, they gave us 100 rupees = $ 0.6 each time), and the mold is black (there wasn’t), and it’s dirty in the room (if you apply sand from the beach, then it will be everywhere), and the food is bad (he gorged himself on fruits, and scrambled eggs, and bacon, after cheap Egyptian hotels the food was normal. - they only took breakfast).
I will say about the country that it is not dirtier than in Ukraine, where I come from (if, of course, you have seen the country outside the capital and its central streets). They "prick" no more than in Egypt (if you are not a "teapot", then you will understand everything). You can not swim in the ocean everywhere, and on the territory of the hotel, however, it is almost impossible (huge wave height): tons of water hit your head and throw you on the shore. But for half a dollar you will be taken on a scooter to one of the neighboring bays, where the waves are calmer, and to the one on the left 10-15 minutes. walk along the beach (there is a natural pool protected by a reef).
The road is hard, with a transfer in Dubai (FlyDubai). Water in the plane is only for money, entertainment (I apologize for Americanism) is paid, $ 10 = 35 dirhams. I advise you to try to carry water in small bottles on board, we were lucky with both water and juices for the child, both of which the airport security missed in hand luggage. Coffee costs $3, tea $3. And you can watch the movie together with your wife, using the same headphones (each one in the ear). You have to take sandwiches with you on board. In your luggage, take 4 sticks of dry sausage, a knife (so that you can cut it later), a dozen Roshen chocolates for "bribes" to locals, a couple of one and a half liter bottles of water (in general, there are no problems with it, but it's just inconvenient and expensive to run around to buy ), a towel for each family member (the hotel provides, but sometimes they do not dry on time, and for a clean one it was necessary to go to the lifeguard on the beach 100m away). By the way, the hotel has an "Ayurvedic" attitude to the towels in the hotel: no cards and their subsequent surrender (you just take it and don't hand it over, throw it on a sun lounger, no accounting). The road to the hotel from the airport lasted 6 hours, back 5.
Immediately after settling in and going to the beach, we met the local guide Kumar, who organized our cultural program: he took me on a scooter to Hikkaduwa Bay to the Banana Garden hotel / restaurant, where we ate (soup, beer, shrimp, french fries - Ukrainian prices, affordable ), brought ready-made fish (tuna, sea bass, yellowtail) and shrimp, lobsters - prices were always from 600 rupees per pound of shrimp to 4800 rupees per kilo of lobsters, took them on excursions (half the price of the "official" hotel guide), oriented according to real prices for everything and drove to the shops of producers, not hucksters, as well as to a local fruit shop, where they give 3 coconuts for a dollar, not one.
Emotions are still running high. I fell asleep on the beach with my wife hand in hand to the sound of the ocean waves. Swimming in the warm Indian Ocean. By the way, "well-wishers" said: "Where are you going? ". There is "dirt", "stink" and "bedlam". To put it mildly, everything is not true. Saw whales in the ocean. Whoever goes, I recommend not to eat before, during, or after the tour and drink pills (the ship's team suggests). Saw elephants in Udawalawe National Park. Bathed with wild sea turtles in Hikkaduwa. Bought for 2000 UAH. a peignoir made of natural silk for his wife, visited a tea plantation, a nursery of snakes, drank coconuts instead of water (60 rupees a piece). I ate mini bananas for 20 UAH = 100 rupees per kilo, I tried durian (I don’t advise, it smells like shit and tastes not much better), rambutan, lychee, 3 types of coconuts (even brown one can be eaten, the pulp, of course: it is much tastier than our coconuts in Auchan), yellow mango, pineapple.
Conclusion: MUST go. I do not advise the elderly (over 70) and families with small children (under 6). It is desirable to have basic English, but if not a "teapot", then you can explain yourself using gestures and a calculator. Google translate, at least, will help. Sri Lanka gives a truly fantastic, incomparable experience. I "came", got an incredible "experience". You can relax both in a luxury hotel and in a budget hut, or mix a homeless trip with luxury. Everyone, I think, will find his own in this amazing country. I wish you all successful and interesting travels!
P. S. Be vigilant, because the prices sometimes try to podzalamat, and do not sign any left pieces of paper when leaving: they tried to divorce us twice on the last day: they say, "help", sign the paperwork, and then they demand 200 rupees = $ 1.2. It seems that the amount is small, but the very fact of awareness of the divorce is unpleasant. This little thing is nothing compared to all the positive received during the holidays.
We were met in Colombo, taken, as expected, in 5 hours. When checking into the hotel, it turned out that for a room with an ocean view you need to pay extra per day for 30 dollars. When paying for the tour in Ukraine, only Garden - Standard and Deluxe were available. With a sea view, the standard was not sold, and there are 208 rooms in the hotel. Garden is a room inside the courtyard, where there is no balcony and the windows do not open. We named it the Chicken Coop. As we assumed, this is a deliberately created situation, encouraged by the hotel management, where managers squeeze cash out of tourists, receive additional income, which is not taken into account anywhere. From a conversation with tourists, it is known that an additional fee for an ocean view can be from 15 to 35 dollars, as agreed)) Conclusion: you need to pay in Ukraine Deluxe (it will be cheaper).
Met a local tuker. Name is Kumara. He organizes any excursion in any direction. Ready to be an interpreter throughout the island. His brother has a Toyota minibus. Makes a transfer from the airport to the hotel for 30-40 dollars. Taxi at the airport on this route 50-60dol. Will help to get settled and agree on a price in any hotel. Provides lunches for every taste: shrimps, lobsters, crabs, squids, tuna. (for example, he brought us 1kg of king prawns in excellent sauce + potatoes with vegetables for 1000LR (rupees) with delivery to the hotel. ), and, if necessary, dinner (call in advance).
The tuk-tuk driver Kumaru was very helpful.
Guide hotel Marina for 12 days, we have not seen. Doesn't answer calls. You can hear it through the hotel manager. Help is not provided. Tourists are not interested in her. They say it disappears immediately after the sale of the tour.
The ocean, nature, fauna - a real paradise.
The people are nice, the hotel is ok!
I recommend!
1. We arrived at Colombo airport in the morning, at 10 o'clock, checked in, got our luggage. We (as expected) were met by a representative of the tour operator company and we began to wait for everyone who was supposed to fly on other flights, but they had to go with us... It took 2 hours, and it would seem 160 km to the hotel - a couple of hours drive and you already on the ocean, BUT (this is the first and biggest BUT) the bus journey took 6 hours, and this is after 8 hours of flight! It was the first time in Asia, so somehow they were not ready for this at all. As it turned out later, at the airport you can safely take a taxi for $ 60 or even use Uber. And the way to the hotel will take 2.5 hours and you don’t have to wait for anyone! So do not feel sorry and do not wait for anyone - use a taxi! We booked a transfer to the airport (in a comfortable car directly from the hotel) and saved 2.5 hours for rest!
2. They settled into the hotel very quickly, gave them delicious juice with ice, brought things to the room - in general, everything is like everywhere else - clearly and calmly!
3. At the expense of the number, it's like anyone, but we were absolutely delighted! The first floor, the balcony overlooks the ocean (which is only 50 meters away) and the green lawn. The second BUT is only if someone does not like insects, crabs, then it might be worth taking a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor (although I don’t think that this will save from them, after all, these are the tropics! ). Of the minuses of the room... if only not a working TV (lack of remote control) and a leaky shower, but all this was fixed on demand! The room itself is quite decent, large enough, cleaning was done daily, towels were changed (outdoor towels daily, the rest for 10 days - 3 times) - maybe for someone this is important... water, tea, coffee - they always left everything!
4. At the expense of food (we had breakfast and dinner), one thing can be said - dinner was superfluous! Fed remarkably, European food. For lovers of Asia - there are separate local dishes. There were always seafood, fruits and vegetables, sweets, chicken and meat, tea and coffee. For breakfast - quite a delicious scrambled eggs / scrambled eggs with bacon and croissants with fruit - in general, you can find what you can always eat and not be hungry. Why dinner is superfluous, read on...
5. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants around the hotel. One of them - 100 meters from the hotel (immediately to the right of the main entrance) - great food for quite affordable money (for $ 20-25 you can have a wonderful dinner for two, lobster will be a little more expensive). Food for every taste - from seafood freshly caught in the ocean, to grilled chicken, rice and other national dishes! All other cafes/restaurants are located nearby and the level of food and service is very decent everywhere! So, due to the fact that dinner at the hotel was included, we missed the opportunity from the very first days to get acquainted with seafood and local cafes, and when we learned about everything that surrounds us, we stopped going to dinner...
6. The exchange rate of rupees to the dollar: 1 $ = 180 local rupees.
7. In the hotel area you are surrounded by a huge number of tuk-tuks with friendly drivers. Almost everyone speaks English, and most speak Russian. Attention!! ! You should not tell them that you have just arrived and that for the first time in Asia, they, like everyone else, are trying to earn money (for which, of course, they should not be condemned). But they are happy to take you for 200-250 rupees to a local alcohol stall (there are only 2 near the hotel), as well as to the nearest fruit shops, to large cities, to the lake and will accompany you everywhere!
8. Alcohol Attention! The prices are fixed and they are indicated on each jar / bottle, no one has the right to sell you above these prices. The main thing is to point out to them that you know about it and recalculate the total amount for them on the calculator!
9. On the beach there are (as elsewhere) beach-fights. They all speak quite tolerably Russian/English. We were lucky to meet Jiminy - a miracle man: he can take a tuk-tuk in any direction (or recommend friends), organizes excursions for every taste! NEVER take a tour from the tour operator in the hotel (we unknowingly fell for their trick, which we very much regretted). And he also has awesome shrimp with delivery by a certain time to the hotel or to the beach!
10. And finally, at the expense of the ocean, the beach... This hotel is the largest with the most luxurious endless beach in the region. Taking into account the fact that there is an open ocean on the beach, there are no coral reefs or bays, there are always waves, not small ones! We swam almost every day, initially a little scary and unusual, but then great and extreme. In the last 2 days, a cyclone came, waves 3-5 meters high, a red flag - in such conditions you can’t swim anymore, so you need to be ready for this!
So think for yourself, decide for yourself! Have a nice holiday!
